Hey Folks,

We've been in the trenches consulting and creating campaigns. I'm currently consulting on various projects and its exciting. And I'm especially fired up after reading the Donnie Deutsch book " The Big Idea". My mind races so with many ideas that I can barely get them all down. Some of them are in the works and some require months. However I have faith they will get done. Stay tuned to the streets and the net. You will see my ideas come to fruition. Shock while still telling a story. I'm not a fan of shock marketing for the sake of shock. Our stories connect each of us to one another. Even today the greatest marketing tool still is word of mouth.

I'm not one to talk much about what I'm doing until it's out there. The proof is in the pudding.

I will confess that two months ago I created a great campaign for a major beverage company and had them at hello. After I sent the budget, I didn't hear from them. And that's okay. Since then I've created five campaigns. I just keep creating. They will come.

I've created another campaign for an independent artist that I was told will cause some "problems". In a good hip way though. I've learned not to rely on the old guard and audience. There's a whole universe out there. I've given a lot of free advice and ideas over the years mainly because I actually give a darn about people and those I believe in. I'll continue to do that from time to time but I'm a family woman. I have to be paid my worth.

I plan to have a site soon that will showcase my expertise and ideas soon.

Back in the day I was a Final Four Fanatic and a Hip Hop Head. I even had my own hip hop radio show on WIUP. My girl Isis aka Brooke and I were the first ladies of hip hop on our college station. I don't watch much basketball lately. Nor have I dropped the latest underground hits. But who knows I'm still young. So I thought why not fuse my two semi loves into one event for one of my favorite festivals.

On June 19, The General Store Inc & Social Art Culture Present Got Hoops? A Celebrity Fathers Day B-Ball Fundraiser on Saturday, June 19th, 2010. The event, which will take place at the Turkey Thicket Recreation Center in Northeast DC will benefit the 2010 National Black Luv Festival. Fashionistas, Professional Bargain Hunters, Stylists and College Girls all ventured out to The General Store Inc's Summer Swap Meet and Greet this past Saturday. Since Saturday we continue to receive emails from those who missed it as well as many wanting to know when the next one will be. The General Store Inc & Capital Hip Hop Soul Fest Present a Yardsale and bake sale on Saturday June 12 at the Riverside Center in Marvin Gaye Park.

This is not your ordinary yardsale. In addition to various items we'll have a baked goods, DJ Tunji and reps from our community.

We are inviting the public to drop off your gently used clothing items, toys, small appliances, furniture, baby items, school supplies etc at the Riverside Center located on 5200 Foote Street in NE DC on Friday, JUNE 11th between noon and 6pm.

Everyone who donates items for the yardsale will have their names placed in a special drawing to receive a prize. The prize is sponsored by The General Store Inc. The drawing will take place at the festival on July 24th. You must be present at the drawing to receive your prize.

All proceeds from the event will go to the Capital Soul Hip Hop Festival taking place on July 24th, 2010. Named by The Washington City Paper as "one of the summer's best freebies", The festival is an annual summer festival that takes place in Marvin Gaye Park in Washington, DC.

The Eos brand of organic lip balm may be giving my Burt's Bees a little competition. I'm a sucker for cool packaging. It's sphere shaped container had me all giddy over Easter Weekend. The Orange Series Part 1: My Watch

The Orange Series will feature some of my favorite orange things I'm feeling at the moment or possess myself.

My Watch:

I'm a frugal gal. My husband calls me cheap. I consider myself resourceful and budget conscious. I also believe in quality. I don't believe quality always costs. As in the case of my orange $8 watch from Walmart. Yes I shopped at Walmart. I was boycotting them for a second. SHH don't tell anyone. But when you're vacaying in Amish country where else do you go. It's like Disney Land. Anywho I got the watch more so because of the design and the fact that it's my favorite color. It's def plastic, very durable, water resistant and has a snazzy green light. I've had this watch since June of last year and it works perfectly. And the best part is it goes with everything. My kids sweat me every time I put it on. They tell me that's a kid's watch. Mommy You need a grown up watch. My orange plastic $8 watch has lit up the dullest of winter days. It's just my little plastic piece of Pop Art for my wrist.

Magnetic Marketing

At least twice a month, John Critzos II mails me a magnet. I use them to keep my Deer Park Delivery reminders and School calendars in plain sight. Critzos is a local Auto Accident Attorney who obviously still believes in direct mail marketing. Direct mail can still be effective in today's world if it's not in the form of a long "personalized" brightly colored letter or envelope filled with discounts at the local tanning salon.

Most of my direct mail aka junk ends up in the recycle bin unless it's a coupon or a magnet. I've collected many a sticker from companies which my mostly end up on my kid's stuff or on my kids. I think Critzo's got it right using the magnets. What household doesn't use magnets? And where do the magnets normally go? Critzo's magnets range the standard business card design to medium square sized ad. The magnet features his contact info, area of concentration and his motto.

Monday with Miss Li and SXSW 2008

An email from the Swedish embassy got me thinking about my own SXSW experiences in 2008. The email was an invite to a concert featuring Swedish singer Miss Li taking place tommorrow. I went to her myspace page and have been bumping her tunes for the past three days. Miss Li is currently performing at this years festival in Austin which I'm now calling the Sundance of Music which could be taken as both positive and negative. The landscape and definition of "indie" has certainly changed. Anywho I did recognize one of Miss Li's song's "Bourgeois Shangri-La" from an Ipod Nano commercial. I really can't wait to check her out live.

I'm not sad I missed SXSW this year. It has however made me reminsce over my 2008 Austin Adventures which included

-watching lito connect Lykke Li and B.O.B.

I purchased this cool breadbox on a Target trip back in January. I have this thing about containers. The Wowzer Red Breadbox from Target's Room Essentials line caught my eye as I was searching for.....Well who even remembers what I was searching for after this beauty caught my eye.

And of course after I saw the $6.38 sales price tag, it was pretty obvious she was coming home. It doesn't lock or secure but it's not like I'm filling it with the other kind of "bread". And though red isn't a significant part of my wardrobe, I do find myself decorating with it here and there. Now I knew there wasn't going to be any bread put inside. Besides I'm on hiatus from BREAD. The breadbox is the perfect hideaway for my monthly bills that need tending to. I have it sitting out in my living room and no one is none the wiser. Well until I wrote this entry.

I looked online and saw they had them in other colors. Peep the yellow and Vintage Teal versions. adore the yellow and the Vintage Teal. I also noticed that mine is steel all around. The red one online has a see through side panel. I'd suggest the all steel ones. I do intend to purchase several of these and stack them for my new office. Snazzy!

Trending Waters

Yesterday afternoon my 5 yr old and I hit our local library. At the moment our neigbhorhood library is a temporary building as they complete construction on the new one. See rendering above. I'm a little too excited about the new one opening April 10th!!!

Anyway prior to our visit to the temporary libary yesterday, I had never set foot in the place. MLK Library on G street is our usual spot. I had been going there for well over 10 years. As my son was picking out every Dinosaur book ever written, I headed straight to the adult non-fiction. My son narrowed his armful of books down to 3.

I ended up finding this cool little 100 pager The Trendmaster's Guide Get a Jump on What Your Customer Wants Next by Robyn Waters. I started the book early this morning while on the train to work and finished it after I picked up the kids from school. Waters is a former vice president of trend, design and product development for one of my favorite stores Target.

The book offers an A to Z approach for understanding and spotting trends. One thing that stood out to me was 3H Design Theory which highlights the three main reasons a customer buys something.

Head-about the need -

The idea of mass customization dismisses the original definition of the word trend. Waters says "Trend for the sake of trend is not very trendy. The new mantra is "just for me "

Today's consumer is all about personalization and individuality. Anywho I know I'm geeking out a little here. I just signed up for Waters's newsletter and can't wait to read "The Hummer and the Mini: Navigating the Contradictions of the New Trend Landscape."

So I have a few pans in the fire. I work well this way sometimes but my approach is about to change. My focus as of late is to bring more attention and increase the visibility of the TGS and to finally put my new production "Will She Love Me ..." to bed only to wake her up this summer.

That being said and being a lady of less talk, more walk; I hope to launch the official TGS website which will feature the Special ITemz Blog, Sampler Section will feature what the store is listening to at the moment , media, clients and of course consulting rates. I am planning on bringing a graphic designer and attorney on board. There's more but I've already said too much. Stay tuned.

I refuse to speak about my production. It will be "walking" soon. Laterz.

I'm part of the bespecteled crew. I have been since middle school. It' s a wonder I didn't put my parents in severe debt over the many broken, stepped on or misplaced glasses I've had over the years. Looking back I absolutely despised wearing glasses. I wass called a nerd or Inspectah Willabee Bookworm (still don't know where that came from)" Wearing glasses sucked. In 7th grade I had these GINORMOUS pink and blue ones with little tabs on the side that looked like birth control tablets. They were also photogreys so they would turn dark in sunlight.

Eyewear has since become one of the top fashion accessories especially among the non near and or far sighted folk. I did experiment contacts in college. But despite my childhood mishaps, I still prefer glasses. I consider myself a frugal gal. I've come to the realization that I'll be bespectled for some time. Yes I refuse to get laser surgery. And to be honest Hour Eyes and Lenscrafters just aren't cutting it lately. So i've been researching eyewear designers. Below are some of the ones I'm currently digging.

I discovered Ritz Crackerfuls after a family trip to Costco. My kids decided to spen their lunch time sampling as many things as they could throughout the store as we shopped. My 5 year old almost went in for the little cups of fatburner juice. Anyway the one item they kept running back to were the Ritz Crackerfuls. Then I went back and finally I got a couple of boxes so they can take to school. I tried not to eat any of them and ended up sneaking about three packs for my own lunch.

I was always a fan of cheese and crackers but Nabisco did something right with these. I'm obessed. And it doesn't help being snowed in. After my re-up trip to the grocery store this morning, the Crackerfuls boxes just happened to be the first items I see while strolling through the automatic doors? And the were on sale 2 for $5!! It made waiting an hour in the self-checkout aisle not so bad after all.

Crackerfuls are made with real cheese and 5 grams of whole grain per serving. They are available in four cheese, classic cheddar and garlic herb. The garlic herb is my personal fav.I like how they are individually wrapped which makes it easy to slide into even my smallest clutch.

Nabisco claims it's the snack that will help keep you satisfied until your next meal. I can certainly attest to that. I ate two for a midday snack at 1130 and was able to eat a late lunch. And by late I mean 1pm. It's been my perfect fix since I've sworn off of bread since 3 weeks ago. TGS approved!

Tommorrow is my birthday. Its also my brothers and we're not twins. Til this day I still think it's a conspiracy. I mean we had to share cakes since 1980 something until high school. I'll never forget the birthday my mother experimented with the leftover candy canes off the Christmas tree by using them on and in our cake. Seemed like a good idea at the time. But alas my attempt to consume the cake left me with a sore jaw and dislike for candy canes.

As I graduated from college and settled into adulthood, I lost count of the candles. As cliche as it sounds, age is truly a number. I cringe watching those makeover shows that I should dress a certain way because I'm 30 something. I think one should dress depending on their lifestyle. Besides I'm of a different breed. I was born mature. I'm a capricorn.

Now onto my dream wishlist. I'm not into wanting much for my birthday save for spending it with either friends and or family. But as an independent brand specialist, it's my duty to supply you with a list of my top 5, b-day dream wish gift list. And if you're feeling the spirit of giving, I'd be happy to receive!

Will She Love Me When I'm 64” is a multimedia production that follows Jazz as he tries to figure out where he fits in an industry that boasts youthful swagger, street tales and fast turnover.

Upon hearing about the retirement of his idol, DC based emcee Jazz revaluates his own career as he tries to make a living in an industry where longevity wasn't built into it's lifestyle. At the same time Jazz’s manager Schooley, usually sketchy with his connects, may have finally found an opportunity that will take Jazz to the next level. Meanwhile, Jazz has been trying to steer his best friend Mo off the streets. Mo has just finished serving time in DC central cell after his cousin Derrick was murdered last summer. Mo has several side hustles and is a self-proclaimed "street counselor." Jazz's father was never sold on his son pursuing hip hop as a career.

So here i was ready to rant about the annoying middle part of those paper toilet seat covers used in public bathrooms when I came across Pressalit. Pressalit is a luxury brand of toilet seat covers or lids founded in Denmark. Pressalit’s mission is to add aesthetics and functions to the bathroom and by that to the end-user’s everyday life.

ThePressalit line offers such options as the soft close which promises to lower softly and land quietly on the pan. This must of been made with children in mind.

THe autoclose model is the knightrider of toilets that will probably save many a marriage and or household. Equipped with an infrared sensor, which registers the user; the seat will automatically close after the user has stepped out of the sensor’s reach. The infrared sensor functions independently regardless of the amount of light in the room.

Features such as the quick release function allows the consumer to clean their toilet efficiently by pressing the buttons on either side off the seat. Other models feature the lift off function allows you to remove the entire seat in record time.

And that's why The General Store Inc and Se'Va Vintage Presents Swap Meet and Greet/Fall Coat Drive. The event takes place November 15th at LIV nightclub located on 2011 11th Street NW from 1pm to 5pm.

Swapping is great for all you cost conscious fashionistas out there. What is a swap?

Well you bring your gently used clothing items to the venue. Our volunteers will sort them and give you a ticket based on the item and amount of items you bring. The amount and condition of the items you bring determines what you'll receive. Rules will be also announced and displayed at the swap.

On November 8, 2009 the Art of Living Foundation presents Waves of the Beauty. Waves of Beauty is the second annual Women's Leadership Conference to be held in DC. The conference is aligned to International Conference to be held in Bali, Indonesia March of 2010. This years conference in DC features an intergenerational panel that exemplifies women's leadership, a banquet style luncheon,yoga, dancing and a series of artistic performances.

A Brand Story: The Bee and the Bleach

Burts Bees I've been using Burts Bees since 2002. It's a hip step up from Chapstick and I love that their products are 100 % natural. That little yellow tin of lip balm is my daily saviour. It's the one thing besides my wallet that remains in my purse(s). My whole family uses the lip balm. I also love the handsalve. And I quite admire their business model, THE GREATER GOOD. I subscribe to their newsletter The HIVE for Pete's sake.

Burt's Bees was founded in Maine in the 1980's after a fired waitress by the name of Roxanne Quimby started selling candles made from Burt Shavit's leftover honey. The couple split in the early 90's. Then Quimby sold the company to Clorox in 2007. Shavitz, whose likeness is used on the packaging is now a multi-millionaire living in a turkey coop. I'm a loyal consumer for the story alone.

But let's face it. How smart of Clorox to purchase Burt's Bees. I mean would you have ever associated bleach and 100% percent natural. Of course not. But you do get Clorox's GreenWorks Line of natural cleaning products. AHA!

I've summarized that Clorox's reinvention as a more socially responsible brand was done in the following ways.

1) Buy a popular, 100 % percent natural brand with a great backstory

2) Develop a natural product line

3) List all the ingredients for all your products on your website

4) Promote their committment to public safety and the environment

To be honest Clorox has built a strong brand. It's almost 100 years old!! And Hello, Clorox isn't just about the bleach business. Though it's funny how we immediatly associate bleach with Clorox. I mean, I've always called bleach, Clorox. AHH the power of a name.

Yet Clorox owns such popular brands as Amorall, Pine-Sol, Liquid Plumber, Tilex, and more.

Some will still believe Burt's Bees "sold out" to Clorox. In defense of both and for the greater good, I'd say in this instance BRANDING TOGETHER never hurt a fly and even a honeybee for that matter.

DC's Dastardly Duo

Washington DC Emcee/Producer/Singer KOKAYI and DJ/Producer Sharkey have joined forces as Dastardly. The group has been receiving some buzz after releasing their ep BrighOutloud on Itunes. And now the duo are currently being considered for nominations in various catergories for the 52nd Grammy Awards.

The group describes their project and genre of music as simply bending. Bright Outloud features elements of hip hop, electronica, alternative rock and pop.

Bio: The fiery elixir known as Dastardly contains one part Sharkey, one part Kokayi, and two parts icy madness. The music born of angst and an unsatisfied appetite for danger and delight pleases while tickling the very nerve that keeps you coming back for more. Take critically acclaimed producer/musician, Sharkey, whose mix of pop and eclectic music sensibilities have earned him worldwide respect from the press and a list of collaborators that looks more like a who’s who of industry shapers. Match him up with 2008 Grammy nominated vocal powerhouse and hip-hop valor, Kokayi, and you have this year’s next musical thermogenesis. Some call it party music. We call it next music. We are bright and loud and we play it that way because it keeps you moving. We are Dastardly.

SI: Why did you decide to collaborate?

KOKAYI: It was a no brainer for me, Shark is a monster with the production and recording so i felt it was natural because of the chemistry we had while working on Monster Maker.

Sharkey: I learned how diverse and talented he was through the sessions on Monster Maker. The sessions ended up being a lot of fun. So it was really a no brainer when I started pulling the early ideas together for the Dastardly tracks.

SI) Why the name Dastardly? How would you describe your sound and is it import to describe your sound?

Sharkey: Dastardly by definition describes the rawkus nature of the project and music itself. Its really about just not caring, having fun, and being in your face. The music is very much all of that.

KOKAYI: Dastardly just worked, it was either that or Catty Wompus. It's music that can slide into several genres of music. He and I listen to a lot of different music and with an open mind comes many possibilities and the freedom to express oneself without fear of not fitting in to what is expected of you.

SI: What do you want folks to get from music? What is your favorite track off the ep?

KOKAYI: My favorite tracks are My House, Low and Paper Chaser and some that aren't on the Bright outloud EP..we have some deadly skeletons to unleash.

Sharkey: I think that the music in general is an outlet. People have tough lives. This shit is party music so that we can all break free for a few minutes of the day and remember what its like to be care free. All the tracks have a real different feel. But they all wil'out.

SI: If you could pick anyone to go on tour with right now, who would it be and why?

Sharkey: I'd like to go on tour with Spank Rock. Because everyone in the camp is friends of ours. The entire tour would be insane!

KOKAYI: Lady Gaga, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Battles, Amanda Blank or MGMT. They are unique in what they bring to this musical landscape.

SI: What artists/music are you both currently listening to and NOT listening to?

KOKAYI:I am Listening to BP3 and Major Lazer , not listening to Vivaldi and Argentinian Tango for personal reasons.

Sharkey: I DJ parties quit a bit and really appreciate some of the pop stuff I drop for their ability to whip crowds into a frenzy quickly. Aside from that, I'm listening to a lot of the work Switch is doing right now. His production is super interesting.

SI: What brands are you currently affliated with? What brands do you want Dastardly to be affliated with?

Sharkey: Drumbums Global.

KOKAYI: I have a really loose relationship with Puma that i'd like to make official. I'd like to reach out to all the eyeware manufacturers to affiliate with us. We both wear glasses (hint, hint). Earnest Sewn, Ozwald Boatang, Etnies, Volvo, Kia etc..

SI: How important is branding for artists?

KOKAYI: Branding is key, to most in the industry you are a product, that is to be sold, to make money, that's what the investors pay money to the company for to increase their bottom lines from a minimum investment. Who better to decide the direction of the product, than the product. Seek out your niche and pay attention to the nuances that you provide a specific market, exploit those and become a brand.

Sharkey: Branding is most important these days. The face of the industry has changed so much and continues to change. If you are not 2 steps ahead of the industry, then you are behind. Music doesn't rely on record sales anymore like it did. So the branding of your band in order to sell in other areas is the only way to survive.

SI :What was your favorite item to purchase from the corner store/general store or bodega when your were young?

Sharkey: I rock Orbitz gum and chapstick. I always have both on me always.

KOKAYI: Now A Laters and Root Beer. I was made to get Kools and Tampons but hey nothing in life is free so i got to keep the change and cop my own supply to feed my vice.

Digging and Hunting The Country Way

While growing up in the country, I was privileged to experience such things as making jelly from the grapes my mother and I picked from the vines that lined my grandmom's driveway. I also remember going to yardsales and having them. I've always been about finding classic items for less and knowing how to shop on a budget. During these financially challenging times, it's great to know how to mix your luxurious clothing with thrift finds. And from time to time, you can find luxurious clothing in the thrift store. Digging for classic, quality clothes, accessories and furniture is one of my obsessions. I adore pieces that remind me of the country, mid-century design, traveling, reading and art.

I've been scouring thrift stores, antique stores, yardsales and estate sales for years. I've found various items some by known labels and some unknown. Everything from 1970's Halston purses to Lanvin Skirts to Burberry Coats. My love for the hunt and vintage clothing led me to open up a store on etsy.com. I invited my friend and fellow "hunter" Virginia. Our store, Se'Va Vintage currently sells vintage women's clothing and accessories from 1960's through 1980's. We plan to venture into menswear as well. We'll be having some dope fall/winter stuff up soon.

IN L.U.V.

I know it's been a minute. Guess that doesn't make me a great blogger. I haven't been tweeting or facebooking as much because I'm been in the trenches of coordinating the Youth Village for the 2009 National Black Luv Festival; finishing my play; sprucing up Se' Va Vintage and being mama/wifey which is a fulltime,overtime 6am til with hardly any leave or sick days.

Anywhoville, I created the Youth Village last year after I saw a need to to do something for all the youngins who attend. This is the festival's 12th year and it's bigger, blacker(as in stronger) and better. haha

Anywho I hope you all can come out this Sunday between 12pm and 7pm at John Marshall Park unofficially renamed Fanny Lou Hamer Park located on 4th and Pennsylvania. Our theme this year is Act On Red, Black and Green. GO HERE already! Might I add the H Street festival is the day before and looking at the lineup/events this year, it seems the H not only stands for the street, but for HIPSTER! EH! Yeah I said it what.

Will She Love Me When I'm 64??!?

For the last 3 months I've been writing and editing my second staged production. I don't want to give away too much. Just know I'm sincerely putting everything I got into it; blood, bones, sweat, tears, fears and foot. Look for a reading in early winter 09 and the full bang out Spring 2010. My birthday weekend this past January was dopelicious. I hung out with my homies Tamara and Denee in New York during the Arts Presenters Conference. Denee was scouting and Tamara was performing. We spent the first night freezing our tushes off waiting in line at Santos. (who waits in line anymore) It was also my first visit to CollectHer in Brooklyn where I met owner/all around cool lady Shana who ended up making my Grammy vintage inspired disco dress.

Then Denee and I ventured out to check out Guillermo E. Brown and Billl$ at their rehearsal space. I was instantly memerized by their brand of electrodubpunkfunk or at least that's what i'm calling it. Guillermo was so gracious enough to respond to my little q/a while traveling to Portugal and Germany. Cheers.

SI: How did you and Bill$ get together? Why the name Bill$?

GB: BiLLLL$ began as collaboration between me and William Johnson (aka Gordon Voidwell). Will was a student of mine at NYU's Clive Davis Dept. of Recorded Music. He passed me a demo cd one day that he was trying to give to Pete Rock. I'm glad I got it. There were a few banging instrumentals on there (the backing track to "Tell me it's not going to waste") and a vocal track or 2 and I was just floored and knew we needd 2 work on some stuff 2gether. 2 men named William=BiLLLL$ with similar influences/formative experiences and it was begun as a very real attempt to be able to pay our bills using ourselves. Cochemea Gastelum (Sharon Jones, Antibalas) who i met at the Knitting Factory on Leonard came onboard. and we had a musical thinktank!!! We've added/subtracted a folks along the way...like in Seattle I had the luxury of a quartet, so along with Will and Cheme, I had the magnificent drummer Kassa Overall (Geri Allen) and the stellar percussionist Neil Ochoa (Si Se)

SI : Why do you make your own instruments? Did you patent them?

GB: The instrument that I use right now is called a Zendrum. It is made by a dude in ATL named David Haney. Not sure if he's got a patent on it or what. But mine was made for me custom. I also use a kind of post-controller made called a UC33e. The challenge right now is for these things to work together wirelessly, it works but with some probs. I really need to start from the drawing board and smash everything together and come up with something entirely new.

SI: How would you describe your sound? Is genre important to your career?

GB: The pianist/composer Vijay Iyer described my music as "chaotic soul" and I think that's a grea moniker. I have a mixture of musical experiences...show tunes, free jazz, hair metal, drum and bass, soca, calypso, experimental electronic music, dj-based stuff, hip hop of course, disco, 70's funk/fusion...Genre might help my marketing plan a bit more, but I'm definitely not a marketing music person, I am learning that side of things. If i put genre or some marketing concern b4 just making what comes to me as musical truth, I would NEVER get the sound that I have now...IMPOSSIBLELY PREPOSTEROUS :)!

SI: Do you think its necessary these days to categorize music? Why or Why not?

GB: sure music should have a name, but not neccesarily a category because you can search and find and discover music with that name. I put music into categories but that's in my own mindsystem. every1's got their own way of thinking or breathing about the music.

SI: If you could go on tour with any other artist or band who would they be?

GB: Afrocuba de Matanzas, Olodum, Grace Jones, Peter Gabriel, Tortoise, Battles, Gonzales, Micachu and the Shapes, Matthew Herbert

SI: Do you currently rep any musical brand? If you were to associate yourself with any particular brand, what would it be and why?

GB: I rep for what me and my friends and musicians I admire are making...many of my myspace friends...

SI: What do you see when you listen to your own music like my favorite " Disengage the Game"?

GB: "Disengage" Is about participating and not participating in various systems. There are positives and negatives to each system or game or way of being. And I wanted to acknowledge that dance in musical terms. I definitely try to paint picture in people's minds when I create a song. I mean that's what I am trying to do, create music or sounds that move people and create images and thoughts and reactions

How could I forget about Phantogram. They're a duo of upstate NY kids dope enough to tour with the Noisettes. I know some of the audience at Rock and Roll seemed quick to write them off due to their apparant antsyness while waiting for the Noisettes. But then the female member, Sarah D let the beat drop and it was over. Surreal. Melodic. Spacey. Thumping. I'm all about stage production so I thought their choice of lighting and smoke was the perfect touch.

According to their myspace page" Their music can be described as a culmination of unique street beat rhythms, spaced-out synths, swirling guitars, with combined technology and organic textures. "

Thankfully they're coming back this way again: September 14th at DC9 with the Pomegranates. GO

THe Circus Came to Town: Noisettes at Rock and Roll

Let me start again by saying The Noisettes are one of my top favorite bands. I'm still wearing out their first record " What's the Time Mr. Wolf" " My voice gave out when I caught them at SXSW two years ago. They've created the perfect blend of punk, soul and 1960's rock. Yet after attending Wednesday nights show at the Rock & Roll Hotel I was left, well how should I put it ...well just left.

I took some things into consideration:

1) Trying out new material onstage.

2) Realizing that I'm sincerely not feeling some of the new material. (just not feeling the electro 80's fusion on "Saturday Night" and "Don't Upset the Rhythm") I beg them not to go the way of the black eyed pea!! i'm a fan of the throwback but "I'll Never Forget You" is just okay for me. "Atticus" is stellar.

Despite sound issues throughout the eve, frontlady Shingai and mates put on quite a beastly production. Shingai's crystal clear vocals and theatrics are always a must see. Anyone that has ever witnessed Noisettes can attest to Shingai's catlike flexibility and circus stunts. Girlfriend outfitted in her own unique brand of fab, works every muscle in her body to sell her songs.

Wild haired drummer Jamie Morrison manically plays everything from a set to a wooden box to a speaker all the while channeling "Animal" from the muppets. Guitarist Dan Smith plays and harmonizes well with Shingai. Smith effortlessly makes his guitar weep and scream at once.

Show Highlight: Encore! Lights go dark. Shingai magically appears on top of the bar and in the spotlight seducing her fans and their cameraphones with a new tune "Atticus." I'm sure she's done this before but she makes it felt so fresh and spontaneous. After stretching her body along the bar, Shingai commendeers one happy fella's back for a piggy ride back to the stage. Priceless

Brand Spotlight: Janelle Monae

Classic. Courageous. RetroFuture. Thats the Janelle Monae Brand.

By now you all know about Janelle Monae. You know, the living android from ATL whose music I would define as futuristic rocabilly. She's the Outkast protege whose Myspace popularity and talent was praised by Diddy. Her single " Many Moons" garnered her a 2009 Grammy Nomination for Best Urban Alternative (what does that mean). Her "Suite" Metropolis stays on repeat in my household. My daughter channels her regularly.

Suite Concept

Instead of releasing a full album or normal ep, Janelle releases her music as quarterly "Suites" Janelle and her crew The Wonderland Arts Society recognizes that today's listener is all about the playlist.

According to her "As one can imagine, this suite model continually excites the consumer and music lover, while creating countless opportunities for Ms. Monáe to experiment artistically and grow creatively with her audience." (love this)

TGS recommendation: Suite idea is great. PERIOD.

Image and Personal Style

Janelle's signature image and personal style is the perfect mix of late 50's early 60's rocabilly meets Michael Jackson meets Gene Autry meets Chuk Berry. Whether its bolo ties, tailored tuxedo separates, ruffles, ascots, or saddle shoes; the colors remain black and white. Her hair is rolled into a tight pompadour which unravels when she attacks the stage. In pictures she even poses in early 1960 Hollywood stylee.

TGS recommendation for future style choices-Janelle should play more with her current style by adding in more bold colors and patterns such as red, orange, blue, and polka dots. I'd like to see her in cigarette pants ala Audrey Hepburn. I see her diving into a modern version of Old Hollywood like such fashion icons as Kathrine Hepburn and the regal elegance of Nina Simone. I guess the Jetsons meets Cooly High. ( I so get her style! Yall don't know me by now-check me this fall)

Live Performance & "Short Film"

Janelle's show is not just about the smoke machine. Janelle Monae’s on-stage antics rival the moves of James Brown, the theatrics of David Bowie and the liveliness of Latin soul queen La Lupe. Janelle's "shortfilm" for her single "Many Moons" is 6 minutes and 31 seconds of pure !!!!
It's a missing scene from The Wiz. It's the secret underground society of Oz. It's Ebony Fashion Fair in year 3002 meets the Twilight Zone. More Short films Please. ( I got treatments) Nuff.

Brands: Janelle has been featured in a Gap commercial and numerous publications most noteably Vogue.

TGS recommendation: I'd recommend Janelle partner with brands such as Ambi Skincare, Wellington Boots, Tracy Reese, a promotional campaign for the Parker Meridian Palm Springs, Knoll, Hass Avocadoes, KEDS, and Crest White Strips.

Synopsis

Janelle's original brand of hip hop, funk, theatre, science fiction, and rock and roll is daring and fresh. She is a sonically charged time-traveler who is equipped to lead the revolution to save us all from the diluted and copycat offerings we are fed by today’s ailing industry. Thanks to Soulculture's "Chocolate City Special" issue which features some DC artists. I personally want to thank the following area institutions and the artists who continue to put out fresh material that's recognized beyond the DMV.

1) KAffa House-This is where it all began for me. It was my first open mic. It's where I got up the nerve to not only express myself on the mic but have some attitude with it (can you say SLAM) It where almost every revolutionary poem ended with haile selassie, jah rastafari ! Brothers smoking the herb in the back. It's where I honed my dj skills with my homie DJ Genesis. Shouts to Generation 2000(you know who you are!!) , Ernesto Mercer, Brandon Johnson, Midnight Band, FACE, Toni Asante Lightfoot, and more.. It was my second home away from my apt which was a couple blocks away.

2) State of the Union-It's where I morphed into a househead. Sunday nights I'd help my homie Monica aka DJ Genesis setup. Ambient and Amphrodite in the backroom. Spontaneous catwalk and vogue competitions. By 1am we'd ( monica, shae and i ) would bumrush to the front room where Sam the Man was having full on church. Talk about testifying. I can count on the my hand the times I paid to get in being an official regular. On other nights it was my homie Tomi and I dancing circles around the lackluster menfolk. Elements with the Amphibians. Joy (RIP) and I making food for The Capricorns aka me, Jamal and Aaron. It was the first time I freestyled in front of a hip hop crowd. I scheduled first press shoot for Opus Akoben there. The best tiny hole in the wall for many of the livest hip hop shows in DC's history. And where my client/friend (now hubby) decided we liked each other.

Bare Voices

Calling all lady vocalists:

The General Store Inc and Up the Road ARts Academy Presents Bare Voices.

Bare voices is a vocal exercise and practice session held twice a month. Women of different training and /or experience background are invited to lend and exchange talent and skills. The sessions are setup to be organic, improvisational and necessary to help strengthen each other's craft.

We work on but are not limited to: ear training, breathing techniques, improving natural tone quality, pitch, belting, and control, voice save techniques, pitch, vocal production, and vocal exercises that will keep the voice healthy and productive. Each month a special guest vocalist will guide the practice focusing on their specific specialty skill. All other practice days will be led by whoever wishes to lend their voice and techniques.

Leaders for each special session will be paid by Up the Road Arts Academy and The General Store Inc. Bare Voices was created by Tamara Wellons in order to build a camaraderie amongst the female singers in the region. The fee for each the hour and half session is $10.00. Seeing Music

I had my Ipod rolling in no particular order and decided to write down the first thoughts that come to mind as I listened to the randomness. I noticed I naturally referenced some brands. I don't know why. Maybe its the poet in me. What can I say people. This is better than The Rorschach Test!

Janelle Monae-Smile- It's a starry eve somewhere in the hills of Phoenix and Palo Alto. Janelle is singing while sitting on the edge of a log chair outside my Albert Frey home. My homies, hubbie and I are lounging around my firepit roasting smores and sipping on some pomegranate cocktails or perhaps baileys. I'm either wearing an orange kimono with cigarette pants or Halston.

The Killers-Jenny Was a Friend of Mine-It's 1985 and there's no air inside the gym. It's the homecoming dance. Everyone runs outside to dance in the rain and end up sloshing in the mud. David Bowie-Let's Dance-I'm in a Japanese nightclub in JAPAN. The whole club is red. I'm wearing a white gown with orange train. Everyone else is wearing red Devo hats and red suits possibly Oswald Botang. I'm the only one dancing in the middle of the floor. Everyone else is blending into the walls and only nodding their heads. The girl from Bladerunner is in a glass cage rocking her see through rain coat. HUH!???

Last Saturday was the 1st annual TGS yardsale benefitting the Up the Road Arts Academy. It was held at a lovely location. We had plenty of early shoppers as expected. Some saw our strategically placed signs while others jogged or walked from their homes nearby. The youngins were pushing the lemonade and candy hard. It was also my homie' Tamara Wellons' daughters burfday. So we had to get down 3 year old luau style with hula hooping, pizza and cake. Things were purchased. Dj Cam provided us with some fresh sounds. And it was a gorgeous day. Fun was had by all. Stay tuned for the next one! Peep some flicks above. Thanks for everyone's support.

DJ SPOTLIGHT : gettin "Nyce" on the wax

Brookly born DC transplant DJ Nyce was the first dj I booked for my first TGS event. He's a humble guy who just happens to be one of the most on point dj's I've ever heard. By that I mean I told him exactly what my event was about and he served up the perfect soundtrack. Yeah. In between dropping some pretty snazzy mixes and spinning at some of the East Coast's most popular nightclubs, he gave SI the low down on the art of partying and more. He also has a blog. Check his techniques below :

SI: Where do you do dj?

NYCE: I dj all over the east coast primarily in DC and NYC. I have also dj'd in other cities such Toronto, Atlanta, Chicago and Rio De Janeiro. I don't have a residence so i'm very flexible. In DC you can catch me at Love, Lux, The Park and Lima. In New York you can catch me at Mansion, Alphabet Lounge, and Gypsy Tea Lounge.

SI: What do you consider the top parties in DC and NYC?

DC is more static when it comes to clubs that are hot while NYC is very fluid. Clubs change management, promoters move and spots die out and fizzle all the time. Social networking sites such as facebook and twitter have been very critical in keeping club goers in the know when it comes to where and when; especially in NYC.

SI : Name three songs that will cause a firehazard on the dancefloor?

NYCE: Drake - Best I Ever Had, Black Eyed Peas - Boom Boom Pow, FLY - Swag Surfin

SI: Do you prefer to use vinyl or mac or both when djing? Do you rep any particular brands of equip?

NYCE: I prefer to use turntables with Serato. Serato is the industry standard vinyl emulation software. It gives me the feel and manipulation of vinyl with the flexibility to have a thousands of songs available with the press of a key. I rep Rane, Technics and Ortofon. These brands are the best in the dj world and keep me on the cutting edge of technology while making my job easier and allowing me to focus on my performance.

SI: What's the most unusual thing that ever happened while djing?

NYCE: Wow. Do you we have to keep this PG? Because i have some r and x rated stories lol. Let's keep it PG...So i am DJ'ing this show in Columbus, OH at the Newport. Foxy Brown and Case. Big Kap and Lil Cease are there as well. I was a huge fan of Foxy, but never met her. I did the opening, then Case does his thing and then Foxy gets on. Then this huge fight breaks out. It's crazy, chairs, bottles flying, the works. So security rushes Foxy out the back door and i'm just trying not to get hit with flying objects. So i run outside. Then i'm like wait a minute all my stuff. So i run back inside; mind you the fight(s) are still going on. So i'm packing my stuff at the back door and who walks in Foxy Brown. I just stood there, couldn't say anything. So now it's me, Foxy, 3 big azz security dudes and 2 other random people. Security is trying to kick everybody out. To make a long story short. Concert was over, everybody was looking for something to do so we all ended up at the waffle house And that was my first and last time hanging out with Inga aka Foxy Brown.

While vacaying with mis padres and my family in PA last month, I spotted 2009 Grammy Nominated singer Maiysha in the window of Lane Bryant. Baltimore vocalist, producer and uber smart chick Carolyn Malachi is back with her second cd "Revenge of the Smart Chicks II: Ambitious Gods." Malachi describes her brand of music as "haute eclectic soular blues." Malachi, who is the great-grandaughter of jazz pianist John Malachi , has created her own modern infectious gumbo of jazz hip hop and spoken word. ROTSC II is the stirring and genre bending follow-up to her 2008 debut "Revenge of the Smart Chicks." The first project spawned a movement, blog and the non-profit Smart Chicks Inc. The organization is dedicated to developing visibility and leadership opportunities for women in the arts. SPECIAL ITEMZ caught up with Ms. Malachi as she continues to promote her album and prepares for the Smart Chicks takeover at this weekend's African-American Heritage Festival.

SI: Seems like you're a one woman show. How is it being an artist/producer/and creative director/event specialist? DO you have a life?

CM: This may sound trite, but it's all art to me, and art is life. Plus, it helps being able to pull from a great group of women, Smart Chicks who are always willing to pitch in.

SI: What is it about your music that represents the smart chick movement?

CM:The evolution of my music represents the Revenge of the Smart Chicks movement. We are always evolving, and adapting to positive change can be very challenging. My music is for folks who recognize and find the courage to welcome and manage that change.

SI: Name a Smart Chick(s) that you look up to and why?

CM: I look up to LindaJoy Burke, poet, and Synthia Saint James, visual artist. They both have quiet wisdom that speaks before they do. I think that makes them powerful and, as artists, unmatched.

SI: What are you doing to make the Smart Chick Brand standout?

CM:The Smart Chicks brand is unconventional, so everything that we have done up until this point possesses elements that, in the real world, are not made to work together. For example, our WOVEN event features performing artists and visual artists of all mediums together in a spoken word format, and the event is always free to the public. Our blog has a unique design that does not lend itself to any sort of template. Each of the arts projects we have done and will continue to do, will always contribute directly to the community and develop the visibility and leadership for women in the arts to which we aspire.

SI: As an independent artist do you think branding is important to your career? Why or why not?

CM: I learned from Michael Jackson's example that branding is extremely important. What many fail to understand about Michael Jackson is that there was no magic. The King sprinkled no fairy dust to conjure the masses. Rather, he accepted his eccentricity and used it effectively to drive his personal brand. Michael was and is the King, not because we bestowed the title upon him, but because he defined for us whom he was. In the same spirit of willful self-definition, I commit to being the best at what I do, on purpose and with zealous intent.

SI: Are you associated with any brands? What brands do you think represent you as an artist?

CM: The Smart Chicks brand is most important to me, at the moment. I don't really fit into other folks' molds, so maybe that's why I have done little research into how other brands fit me. I'm building my own.

SI: When you were younger what was your favorite thing to get from the corner store or bodega or general store?

CM: Hmmmm....In junior high school, I used to go to the corner store close to my school and purchase all of the candies my mom told me not to eat. It was actually a liquor store, but it was a popular hangout. Some boy I liked would go there, and I would follow, trying to be discreet. Funny though- he never paid me any attention and my mom could always tell that I was eating the stuff.

This morning I woke up feeling like I was still dreaming. Last night my homie Lynn and I sang every Michael Jackson hit until our lungs hurt and tears gathered. We realized we were really adults and one of our musical heros died. I remember how my family would gather around the tv witnessing his next "short film". As most, Michael Jackson's music was the soundtrack to my childhood. That poster of him looking all lemony and creamsicleish in that yellow and white hung on my bedroom door. I kissed it every night before bed. I remember the many look a likes and dance contests in middle school. I'm glad my children knew who he was and adore his music. He set a standard and I hope today's artists recognize that and try to work up to it. nuff.
